Your Gateway to Employment in New Zealand
To work temporarily in New Zealand, you must meet specific requirements for a temporary work visa. This section outlines whether you need a work visa, how to qualify, and what the visa allows you to do.
Who Does Not Need a Work Visa?
You do not need a New Zealand work visa if you are:
- A New Zealand citizen or hold a New Zealand residence visa.
- An Australian citizen or permanent resident, including holders of a current Australian resident return visa. (However, if there are conditions on your residence or return visa, a New Zealand work visa may still be required.)
Certain types of work also do not require a work visa. For example, if you are visiting for business negotiations, short-term sales trips, work for official trade missions recognized by the New Zealand government, or work for foreign governments, you may be able to do so under a visitor visa.
General Requirements for Temporary Work Visa Applicants
All applicants for a temporary work visa must meet the following general requirements:
- Be in good health and of good character.
- Have a valid passport for at least three months beyond your planned departure from New Zealand.
- Demonstrate genuine intent to work in New Zealand.
- Apply for the correct visa for your intended stay.
If you are granted a temporary work visa, you must adhere to specific conditions during your stay in New Zealand, including:
- Work must comply with the conditions specified in your visa.
- You must obey New Zealand’s laws.
- You can only stay in New Zealand for the period allowed by your visa. Any violation of these conditions may result in immediate departure from the country.
Additional Requirements Based on Visa Category
Depending on your circumstances, the specific category of temporary work visa you apply under will have different requirements. Below are details on some of the most common work visa categories:
Work Visa Categories
Essential Skills Work Visa
If you have a job offer from a New Zealand employer and are not applying under a specialist work category, you may qualify for the Essential Skills Work Visa. The employer must demonstrate that no New Zealand citizens or residents are available to fill the position. This can be done by:
- Proving that the job is listed on the Essential Skills In Demand Lists, or
- Showing evidence that the employer has genuinely tried to hire a New Zealand worker.
In addition, you must have the necessary qualifications and experience for the position.
Work to Residence Visa
The Work to Residence Visa allows people who are qualified in occupations in demand, have a job offer from an accredited employer, or have exceptional talent in sports or the arts, to apply for temporary work as a pathway to permanent residency.
Residence from Work Visa
For those who are already in New Zealand on a Work to Residence Visa and wish to apply for permanent residency, the Residence from Work Visa provides the opportunity to transition to a residence visa after meeting specific work requirements.
Permanent Residence Visas
If you are interested in living and working in New Zealand permanently, there are visa options based on your skills and occupation. These include:
